Pope Francis admits to dozing off while praying
The pontiff confessed to an audience of 200,000 that he noddes off during his bedtime prayer at the end of a long day. "The fatigue of the day makes you fall asleep, but he (God) understands," added Pope Francis. His comment drew laughter from the crowd.
In general, the pontiff's speech was devoted to charity work. The Pope expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that in today's world, starving and freezing children are not viewed as something unusual. Unfortunately, people are much more interested in secular scandals nowadays, added Francis.
"We cannot become starched Christians, too polite, who speak of theology calmly over tea. We have to become courageous Christians and seek out those (who need help most)," the pontiff said.
Argentinian Jorge Mario Bergoglio Francis has been elected the 266th pope of the Catholic Church on March 13, 2013. He is the first Latin American pope to lead the church, as well as the first Jesuit priest. He has been known as one of the most modest pantiffs. For example he chose to reside in the Vatican guesthouse rather than the papal residence.
Pope Francis celebrated the Pentecost mass before an estimated 200,000 people on Sunday in St Peter's Square, calling for unity and harmony within the Catholic Church.
Speaking to the crowds that included members of around 150 Catholic groups from around the world, the pontiff said the spirit of unity means living "in and with the Church," and added that partisanship only leads to division and conflict.
The evening before, the pope had celebrated a mass before a similarly large crowd who came to Rome to celebrate Pentecost, which commemorates the dispensation of the holy spirit 50 days after Jesus resurrected.
