State Department spokeswoman Jennifer Psaki has issued a statement that the U.S. was aware of no "new shipments" of an advanced version of Yakhont anti-ship cruise missiles to Syria.

She was commenting the publication in the newspaper New York Times, which, with reference to unnamed U.S. officials, reported that Russia had sent a batch of anti-ship cruise missiles of a new modification to Syria.

She reminded that such information had surfaced earlier, in particular, in 2011, and the United States at the time similarly expressed its concern.

At the same time, she said, the United States continues to work with Russia on the idea of convening an international conference on Syria, which would be attended by representatives of the Syrian authorities and the opposition.

Earlier, Russia confirmed it continues to supply the Syrian government of Bashar Assad with "mainly defensive weapons."

Lavrov insisted Friday in Sochi, Russia, that Moscow was honoring its previous arms sale agreements without altering the "balance of forces in the region,” and is not violating any international laws or UN Security Council resolutions.
