Military solution to Syrian conflict unacceptable – Lavrov, Jamil

глава МИД РФ Сергей Лавров на встрече с членами Всемирного координационного совета российских соотечественников за рубежом в Москве

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and leader of the Syrian National Front for Changes and Liberation Qadri Jamil have both rejected a stake on military force in solving the on-going conflict in Syria as unacceptable and called for stepping up cooperation between Moscow and Damascus in various fields, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement on Tuesday.

On April 16, Lavrov met with Jamil, who is Syria’s Deputy Prime Minister and Domestic Trade and Consumer Protection Minister.

The sides discussed at length the situation in Syria and reaffirmed their common understanding of the need to promote a speedy end to the bloodshed and the sufferings of the Syrian people in line with the Geneva communique passed by the Syria Action Group in July 2012.

Jamil, for his part, voiced the readiness of Damascus and the National Front to act without delay to stop violence and address the political aspects of the settlement.

Russia pursues unbiased policy towards Syria

Russia’s position on the Syrian crisis is unbiased and consequently, Moscow can influence its developments in all possible ways.

This was stated by leader of Syria’s Popular Front for Changes and Liberation of Syria Qadri Jamil after his talks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov in Moscow.

We have discussed ways to solve the crisis and we believe that a dialogue between all sides involved in the Syrian conflict is the only way out from the crisis, he said on behalf of the delegation.

The West has shown greater understanding of Russia’s position and Americans and the French have started agreeing on it, Jamil said.

‘Our goal is to gather everybody at the negotiating table’ - Syrian State Minister for National Reconciliation Affairs Ali Haydar

A delegation of the internal Syrian opposition headed by leader of the Syrian Social Party and member of the Popular Front for Change and Liberation, Ali Haydar, is staying in Moscow. He holds the position of State Minister for National Reconciliation Affairs.

Ali Haydar has told the Voice of Russia about the purpose of the visit:

- This is our 4th visit to Moscow since the beginning of the Syrian crisis which has been going on for 2 years now. As before, we, the internal Syrian opposition, have come to exchange views on possible ways of solving Syria’s political problems. We are discussing it with our Russian colleagues, including the leadership of the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

- Are there any changes in the Russian position in respect of the Syrian crisis?

- The Russian position is the same as two years ago. Russia supports the territorial integrity and unity of Syria, interests of all Syrian people and preservation of the Syrian geopolitical position. I assume that this is Moscow’s principled position and it can't change; Russia has been advocating and continues to advocate a solution of the conflict in Syria by peaceful means. It is the issue, on which we have worked and continue to work. All our work is directed at creating the ground for successful political negotiations.

- How do you estimate the current development of events in Syria? Where is the main vector directed at: a political solution, or a coercive scenario?

- The Popular Front for Change and Liberation is trying to find a solution which will suit all the parties involved in the conflict. Our goal is to gather everybody at the negotiating table and recreate the unity of the Syrian people. We have a number of specific proposals with us. But I want to note that there are always those, for whom the path of negotiations is disadvantageous, and who will hamper a peaceful solution of the problem in every possible way. These forces are politically, economically and socially trying to bar all the ways to peaceful negotiations. Despite this, we will make every effort in order to settle the crisis peacefully.
