Will Vienna Philharmonic reveal its Nazi past?

The administration of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra is to respond to the charges of concealing the fact of some of its musicians’ membership in the Nazi party during WW2.

With this aim it will publish all information about its musicians’ activities during that period. Historians who obtained access to the orchestra’s archives are expected to give publicity to the results of their investigations.

According to their data, about half of the orchestra musicians were members of the Nazi party and many of them joined the party before Austria was annexed by Nazi Germany in 1938.

At the same time, thirteen musicians were sent to death camps due to their Jewish origins or political views.
