‘No immediate asteroid threat’ – NASA scientist

NASA director for approaching space objects believes a collision with a kilometer-size asteroid can only happen once in a million years, and even this kind of event cannot wipe out the human civilization.

The destruction, however, would be quite huge, and the loss of life would be in the billions.

Dr Lindley Johnson spoke about this in Vienna on Wednesday after emerging from a session of the United Nations committee on space exploration.

Threats from space became a hot topic last weekend after a huge meteorite crashed into Russia’s Chelyabinsk Region, blowing out countless window panes and leaving close to 1,500 people injured by flying debris and broken glass.
