American legally acquires weapons despite mental illness

A University student in the U.S. state of Maryland, who shot a roommate, and then committed suicide, was able to purchase a firearm, although suffering from a mental illness. This information was reported by the newspaper Huffington Post.

Last Tuesday, 23-year Dayvon Maurice Greene, a graduate student, tried to light a fire in the basement of the building where he lived. When his roommates tried to stop him, the young man opened fire at them from a pistol, subsequently shooting himself.

As a result of the shooting incident, one young man was killed and another was wounded.

According to the newspaper, citing a source in the local police, Green was diagnosed mentally ill, presumably suffering from schizophrenia. However, this did not stop him from legally acquiring a weapon and even spending some time on the campus police squad.
