The Order of Malta turning 900

The Order of Malta turning 900

Ceremonies held at St Peter’s Basilica in Rome have opened a week of Vatican celebrations to mark 900 years since Pope Paschal II established the Order of Malta, also known as The Knights of St John of Jerusalem.

Pope Benedict XVI met with Grand Master Fra’ Matthew Festing and about 4,000 other knights.

All work as international health care volunteers.

One of the Order’s Grand Masters doubled as Emperor of Russia. He was Paul I.
