Bolshoi’s artistic director Sergei Filin to be treated in Belgium

The artistic director of Russia's Bolshoi Theatre, Sergei Filin, will be sent to a clinic in Belgium to be treated for severe burns after a masked man splashed acid onto his face earlier today.

On Friday, he will have an operation in Moscow. “Doctors fear for his eyesight,” Bolshoi’s manager Anatoly Iksanov has told reporters.

Mr. Iksanov said the Bolshoi Theatre’s board of trustees would cover the costs of his transportation to Belgium and medical treatment.

The reason for the attack remains unknown. A team of investigators, criminologists and sinologists were working at the scene since the small hours. The incident is being probed into for premeditated bodily harm.

The main version under investigation is an in-fighting among Bolshoi performers, a police source said, adding more trivial reasons hadn’t been ruled out.
