Mass-protests in Iraq

Mass-protests in Iraq

Iraqi Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Friday, "the return of civil strife to the country is impermissible and something which will destroy everyone."

Speaking on television, he called on demonstrators to "refrain from violence" and the military to "exercise restraint and not use weapons against the demonstrators."

Earlier security forces were forced to disperse an anti-government rally in Mosul the second largest city of Iraq.

The protests, which were attended by hundreds of thousands of people took place in other cities across the country as part of a declared "Resistance Friday."

Protestors are demanding a stop to discrimination against Sunnis and the repealing of several provisions to anti-terrorism laws, which allegedly allow the authorities to "create tyranny."
