Europe hit by record-low temperatures

The European countries have been hit by a spell of unusually cold weather.

The situation is the worst in the Balkans, where a 30-hour snowfall blocked the roads, snapped the wirers of transmission power line and blacked out entire neighbourhoods.

Heavy precipitation caused the cancellation of dozens of flights and complicated the operation of airports in Amsterdam, Frankfurt am Main, Dusseldorf, as well as at Orly and Charles de Gaulle airports in Paris.

High-speed train services have been suspended in France, Belgium, Germany and the Netherlands. Dozens of Europeans, mostly homeless people, have died because of cold weather. Night temperatures fall to 27 degrees below zero Celsius, leaving them no chance of survival.
