Russia warns Turkey against Patriot missiles
Moscow would like Turkey to contribute to the beginning of the inter-Syria dialogue rather than flex its military muscles, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesman Alexander Lukashevich said on Thursday.
“The militarization of the Syrian-Turkish border is a dismal signal,” Lukashevich said, referring to Turkey’s recent request to deploy Patriot anti-missile systems to protect its border with Syria.
He urged Turkey to interact more with the Syrian opposition so as to help start the inter-Syria dialogue as soon as possible.
Turkey already hosted the complex twice. in 1991 and 2003 during the two Iraqi campaigns but never used it.
The Voice of Russia correspondent Polina Chernitsa reports that Moscow urges an immediate meeting of the international mediators “Quartet” for the Middle East settlement at the level of Ministers of Foreign Affairs in order to discuss the situation in Gaza, citing the official representative of the Russian Foreign Ministry Alexander Lukashevich.
“We call for an immediate meeting of the "Quartet" in order to establish efforts on achieving a comprehensive Middle East settlement", - he said.
Earlier, head of the Russian Foreign Ministry Sergey Lavrov discussed the possibility of such a meeting at the talks with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Cambodia; however, the parties agreed that they would return to the issue of the Ministerial meeting of the “Quartet” after the crisis in Gaza was settled.
The Voice of Russia correspondent Polina Chernitsa reports that Moscow has welcomed a truce between Israel and Palestine and urged both parties to exercise restraint citing the Russia’s Foreign Minister spokesman Alexander Lukashevich.
The diplomat also praised Egypt’s mediation efforts to secure Gaza peace.
The ceasefire agreement entered into force Nov 21.
The Voice of Russia correspondent Polina Chernitsa reports that Russian foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has no plans to meet with the representatives of the Syrian opposition on November 26, citing the official foreign Ministry representative Alexander Lukashevichsaid on Thursday.
Thus, he denied the messages of some Russian mass media about the fact that the Minister was going to have a meeting with the delegation of the Syrian opposition in the near future.
"According to my data, no meetings are scheduled at the 26th (of November)", - Lukashevich said at the briefing in Moscow.
