8 die in Sao Paulo unrest in past 24 hours

Eight people have died in street unrest in the Brazilian state of Sao Paulo in the past 24 hours.

Two unidentified bikers fired at a woman with a one-year old baby in the city of Sao Paulo on Friday, killing the baby and gravely injuring the woman.

Still other seven people died in armed assaults elsewhere in the state of Sao Paulo.

Over 250 assassinations have been reported in Sao Paulo since early this October. According to police, the chiefs of a powerful gang, known as The First Command of the Capital, are behind the spike in the number of crimes perpetrated. The gang was formed more than 10 years ago in places of confinement, so the chiefs often give orders from behind bars.
