Bulgarian politician heads PES

Bulgarian ex-Prime Minister Sergei Stanishev has become the new head of the Party of European Socialists which has the second largest and most influential faction in the European Parliament.

He was elected at a congress in Brussels on Saturday in which representatives of Socialist parties from 34 European countries participated.

Stanishev was born in Kherson, Ukraine in 1966. He graduated from Moscow State University and the London School of Economics. He headed the Bulgarian Socialist Party in 2001 and was prime minister of Bulgaria between 2005 and 2009.
