Netrebko to open new season at the Met
Netrebko stars as the headliner at the Met`s opera opening night gala for the second consecutive year which means that the company will enjoy sold-out performances throughout the entire season. For Netrebko fans watching The Elixir of Love staged by Bartlett Sher and conducted by Maurizio Benini is a perfect chance to compare Anna`s performance with the one she offered as Anna Boleyn in Donizetti`s tragic opera of the same name which opened the Metropolitan Opera`s 2011 season.
Starring as Adina in Donizetti`s comic opera in two acts is not new to Netrebko. She has already mastered the role in Paris, London and at her native Mariinsky Theatre in Saint Petersburg. The company`s artistic director Valery Gergiev then asked Anna in what production of The Elixir of Love she would like to act, and the singer chose a joint version of the Paris Opera and London`s Covent Garden.
“Valery Gergiev asked me about my preferences when singing Adina and said that his theatre could stage my favorite production. I mentioned this one because it was full of humor and youthful energy.”
It is yet unclear whether Netrebko`s Adina will be riding a motorbike like it was in Petersburg. But US director Bartlett Sher knows that Anna could perform almost any trick if asked.
Anna arrived in New York earlier this month to rehearse Adina for the opening night at the Met from Austria`s Salzburg where she got rave reviews for her portrayal of Mimi in Puccini’s La Bohème.After the premiere performances of The Elixir of Love at the Met Netrebko is expected in Italy for another Mimi at La Scala before setting off for a European tour across Austria, Germany, France, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and the Netherlands to sing Iolanta in Tchaikovsky’s eponymous opera.
When asked to share her secret of being so energetic despite a very packed schedule, Anna says: “Opera is a very difficult job to do. But when I put my all everything in the performance I feel extremely satisfied. I think this is my personal healthy lifestyle.”
Russian opera fans in Moscow, Saint Petersburg, Kaliningrad and in Netrebko`s native southern town of Krasnodar have a great opportunity to see Anna starring in The Elixir of Love at the Met on October 13 as part of the Live in HD Season which provides live transmission of the company’s operas all across Europe.
