The Portuguese authorities have requested European Union assistance in fighting forest fires , which have spread across the central and northern parts of the country. Lisbon asks its European partners to dispatch four aircraft equipped with an aerial firefighting system. Presently, there are ten large fire sources on the territory of Portugal.

Presently, there are ten large fire sources on the territory of Portugal. Some 2,000 firefighters are trying, unsuccessfully, to contain the blaze. Strong winds, soaring temperatures and dry weather are fanning the flames.
