115,000 people have fled the ongoing violence in Syria. The figure, provided by the office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees, came up at the informal meeting by EU justice and interior ministers that was held on Monday in Cyprus.

Most of these people have crossed into neighboring Turkey, nearly half are in Jordan and Lebanon, and some are in Iraq.

Cypriot Interior Minister Eleni Mavrou said that, according to her information, half of these refugees are children. She added that her government had drawn up a plan to evacuate some 200,000 citizens of EU and other countries, if the situation in Syria continues to deteriorate.
