Serbia mulls recognition of Abkhazia, S.Ossetia

The Serbian parliament looks set to consider formal recognition of the newly-independent republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

In an interview with the Voice of Russia the country’s President-elect Tomislav Nikolic dismissed any comparison between  the sovereign status of these two South Caucasus republics and that of Kosovo, whose independence Belgrade has never recognized.

During his Saturday’s meeting with Presidnet Vladimir Putin Nikolic reiterated Serbia's uncompromising stance on Kosovo even if it hampered its bid to join the EU.

Nicolic thanks Russia for support

The new Serbian President Tomislav Nicolic has thanked Russia for support and said he expects the relations between the two countries to grow and flourish.

Meeting with President Putin in Moscow Saturday, he also received congratulations on winning Serbia’s latest presidential elections on May 20th .

Putin said Russia and Serbia are 'sister nations', and their friendship can help them solve difficult problems.

Russia will grant Serbia a second loan package worth 800 mln dollars for implementing infrastructure projects, Russia’s President Vladimir Putin stated when meeting Serbia’s President Elect Tomislav Nikolic.
