Putin sworn in as Russian president

Vladimir Putin on Monday took his oath of office to become Russian president for a historic third mandate at a glittering ceremony inside the Kremlin.

Placing his hand on a copy of the constitution, Putin swore to "respect and protect the rights and freedoms of the people" and defend Russia's security as he officially took over from outgoing President Dmitry Medvedev.

In his speech, Vladimir Putin pledged to do his utmost to live up to people’s expectations. President Putin believes that Russian citizens should play a greater role in the country’s government.

A ceremony to hand over power from the incumbent president to president-elect has got under way at St.Andrew’s Hall of the Kremlin Palace.

The swearing-in ceremony started at midday, on the same day and at the same hour that Vladimir Putin’s previous inaugurations took place in 2000 and 2004 and Dmitry Medvedev’s inauguration in 2008.
