Residents of Sydney are celebrating the 80th anniversary of one of the main attractions of Sydney; the Sydney Harbor Bridge. The bridge is 1,149 meters long and weighs 52,800 tons and connects the city center and the northern suburbs. Construction began in 1923 and city officials immediately decided that they would build the longest bridge in the world.

The bridge is 1,149 meters long and weighs 52,800 tons and connects the city center and the northern suburbs.

Construction began in 1923 and city officials immediately decided that they would build the longest bridge in the world. As a result the longest span is 503 meters long. However, several months before the opening of the bridge it was revealed that the Bayonne Bridge built in New York had a main span that was 7 feet longer.

Sydney Harbour Bridge was opened to traffic March 19, 1932.
