Krasnoyarsk ready to host Universiade 2019
The Russian Siberian city of Krasnoyarsk has got an official confirmation of a status of Russia’s representative in a bidding company to host the 2019 World Winter Student Games. Russian President Dmitry Medvedev ordered the Russian Prime Minister to start dealing with the implementation of concrete projects pertaining to the Games.
Krasnoyarsk’s bid for hosting the 24th Universiade is now widely discussed in this East Siberian city. Initiating the bid was Sergei Gurov, minister of sports, tourism and youth policy of the Krasnoyarsk region, says that Krasnoyarsk has competitors in Russia when it comes to holding the 2019 World Student Games.
"Krasnoyarsk is ready to hold a forum of any level, be it a federal or an international one," Gurov says. "We have all preconditions for this – history, money, and people’s energy. We accumulated much experience back in Soviet era. We have a host of sports facilities, and we are mapping out a program of the construction of more such facilities in the future. We are already preparing for the 2019 Winter Universiade even though the host city is yet to be picked. Even if our bid fails, we will continue to construct sports facilities and train athletes," Gurov adds.
In the mid-1990s, Krasnoyarsk was seen as a city which could host the Goodwill Games. At the time, the regional economic situation prevented Krasnoyarsk from hosting the event which is not the case now that the region’s thriving economy may contribute considerably to funding the 2019 Winter Universiade, Gurov goes on to say.
"Right now, we are, along with the Russian Economy Ministry, are dealing with relevant cost estimate as far as our possible hosting of the Universiade is concerned," Gurov says, adding that Kazan’s experience is being also studied. "Considerable funds are needed to build modern infrastructure, including an airport, highways and hotels. Also on the agenda is the construction of ice rinks for ice hockey and figure skating events, as well as a ski stadium and a 120-meter ski-ramp. Additionally, the construction of the athletes’ village should be in the pipeline," Gurov concludes.
Kransoyarsk’s bid is being prepared by a group of specialists who represented Kazan, Sochi and the World Soccer Championships. Meanwhile, Krasnoyarsk citizens are poised and ready to make the international community believe that it is Krasnoyarsk that should host the 2019 Winter World Student Games.
