Italian Court divorces same-sex couple

The Court of Appeals in the Italian city of Bologna ruled to divorce a couple named Bernaroli without their consent. This was due to the fact that the husband 40-year-old Alessandro Bernaroli had changed his sex, becoming Alessandra. In its decision, the court proceeded from the fact that the Italian legislation does not allow same-sex marriages.

Nevertheless, the forcibly divorced couple intends to challenge the verdict in a higher court.

"We are not going to give up our marriage. We do not want a divorce, and never wanted one, but the state does," - said Alessandra, promising to appeal the decision by the end of July.

The couple, while still heterosexual, married in 2005. In addition to the civil registration of marriage, they were married in a church.
