Sochi-2014 Will Cover Its Guests With Patchwork Blanket

Sochi-2014 Will Cover Its Guests With Patchwork Blanket

Russia has chosen the visual image of the Olympic Games, including the 22nd Winter Olympic Games and the 11th Paralympic Games in Sochi. The designer decision is based on a “patchwork blanket” principle, or, in other words, on the combination of the decorative patterns of the well-known Russian crafts, including the Gzhel and Khokhloma pieces.

A “patchwork blanket” means not only Russian hospitality but also Russia’s peculiarities.  The blanket’s scraps present Russia’s crafts, including the Uftyuzh and Zhostovo paintings, Vologda laces, Gzhel and Khokhloma pieces, and Kubachin patterns – altogether 28 elements. There’s also a 29th element there - the feather of the Fire-Bird, which is the symbol of Russia’s national team. The image of the Olympic Games in Sochi is based on the co-participation of each one of the Sochi residents in the Olympic Games, the Head of the Sochi-2014 Organizing Committee Dmitry Chernyshenko said.

"Of course, we would like to do everything in a proper way, first of all, regarding Russia’s hospitality. And the “blanket” in this case unites what seems is impossible to unite, that is, all national crafts traditional for Russia. And we give their modern innovation interpretation, which is the best way to show the world changing Russia."

“Rich style” – such is the concept of the design of the Sochi Olympic Games. For the first time in history, the image of the Sochi Olympics will have several colours. Among the colours will be dark-blue, yellow, green, and crimson. All these are the colours of sports and infrastructure facilities in Sochi. The Olympic Games are approaching fast, a seven-time figure skating champion Irina Slutskaya says.

"This seems new to me. During the Olympic Games we are in what could be termed a “capsule”. We neither see nor hear anything. And here we load ourselves with enthusiasm and energy. By 2014, we’ll be overfilled with impressions to such an extent that we’ll simply become rooted to the Olympics. The choice of the Olympic mascot, the presentation of the coins, and the presentation of the image - we are actually there now."

Russia agreed the concept of the Olympic style with the International Olympic Committee one year earlier than it is usually done by other countries hosting the Olympic Games. However, the members of the Organizing Committee are sure that this is the best time for this. Both the partners and sponsors of the Olympic Games will have more chances to use the image in their produce. Which means that all people in Russia will be able to feel that the sports festival is approaching.
