Japan quake death toll exceeds 1,000
In Japan, the number of those who died following yesterday’s powerful earthquake and the quake-generated tidal wave has exceeded 1,000.
But no foreign nationals died in the disaster, the Foreign Ministry says in a statement in Tokyo.
Other almost 2,000 people have been listed as missing.
Thousands of buildings have been destroyed in the northeast of the country, and over 200 major fires have flared up.
Some 6 million people have been left without electricity, and numerous gas pipeline and water supply system accidents have been reported.
The authorities have already evacuated over 215,000 people from the affected areas.
