START doesn’t alleviate all trust issues – Putin
Russia’s trust in the US isn’t “fully established”, despite the signing of the START treaty, Vladimir Putin told journalists.
He called the document one of the most crucial components for building foreign relations and emphasized that the document creates a favourable external environment for Russia, facilitating stability and order in international ties.
The Russian State Duma – the lower house of Parliament – passed a bill on ratifying START in the first reading, with the second reading due in January.
The US Senate ratified the agreement last Wednesday, adding a special resolution providing for a number of caveats, including on principal issues, such as modernization of the US “nuclear triad”. These amendments have led the Duma to move to a consideration of the document in three readings to provide for its own amendments.
