Russian, Dutch scientists awarded Large Gold Medals

The Russian Academy of Sciences has awarded its Large Gold Medals to a Full Member of the Academy Spartak Beliayev of Russia, and to a Dutch Professor Gerardus ‘t Hooft. This came in a statement during an Academy Presidium meeting earlier today.

The Russian Academy of Sciences has awarded its Large Gold Medals to a Full Member of the Academy Spartak Beliayev of Russia, and to a Dutch Professor Gerardus ‘t Hooft. This came in a statement during an Academy Presidium meeting earlier today.

Beliayev, 87, won the award for his contribution to many important areas of modern-day science, above all, to plasma physics, the theory of atomic nucleus and nuclear reactions. The Dutch scientist won his Russian Academy medal for his research into the Gauge Theory.

The Lomonosov Large Gold Medal, - the top award of the Russian Academy of Sciences, was instituted in 1956. Two medals are awarded every year, one to a Russian researcher, and the other one, to a foreign scientist.
