Major news outlets publish secret cables leaked by WikiLeaks
The New York Times, The Guardian newspaper in England, and newspapers and magazines in three other European nations on Sunday published portions of the new classified material obtained by the controversial WikiLeaks website.
More than 250,000 documents unearthed by the whistleblower organization offer a glimpse into the worldwide communications of the US State Department and its embassies, consulates and missions through what are commonly referred to as "cables." They also reveal that the US spied on UN leaders, including Secretary General Ban Ki-moon.
In late July WikiLeaks published documents shedding light on US war crimes in Iraq and Afghanistan.
