Russia condemns Yushchenko for declaring Bandera a Hero of Ukraine
Russia’s Foreign Ministry has critically condemned the outgoing President of Ukraine Viktor Yushchenko for declaring the Second World War guerilla leader Stepan Bandera a national hero. The move may spark protests and first of all in Ukraine, a statement released by the Ministry says. Some Ukrainian politicians have also criticized Mr. Yushchenko`s initiative as undermining consolidation efforts in the country. Reaction from Russia was quite diverse-from ironic to toughly critical. Bandera led Ukrainian Nationalist Forces against both German troops and Soviet forces in World War II.
