A shocking statement by an Egyptian lawyer who called on Arab men to rape girls who wear revealing clothing like ripped jeans has lit social media on fire.

Internet users have called Nabih al-Wahsh, a well-known Egyptian conservative and legal expert, a "beast" and a "pig," expressing their outrage over his controversial claim that men have a duty to rape women if they are dressed inappropriately.

"Are you happy when you see a girl walking down the street with half of her behind showing?" the lawyer said in an interview on Al-Assema TV channel earlier this month.

"I say that when a girl walks about like that, it is a patriotic duty to sexually harass her and a national duty to rape her," he added.

Commenting on his statement, some Twitter users warned female tourists against visiting Egypt, saying that Islamist ideology is taking a tight grip over the country.

Others called the man names and wondered how he would feel if some of his relatives would become subject to such horrific acts of punishment.

The Egyptian lawyer's remarks have caused outrage across the country with Egypt's National Council for Women saying that it would file a complaint against the TV channel. The council also called on media outlets to refrain from inviting individuals who incite sexual harassment and violence against women.
