Four men took pictures of themselves in a crocodile trap at the Port Douglas Marina in Queensland, Australia, where a fatal attack recently took place.
Pictures of the swimmers moving around and climbing into the trap were published online, leaving the mayor of Douglas Shire, Julia Leu, in deep shock.
"I was absolutely gobsmacked, this is incredibly stupid and dangerous behaviour. I'm wondering if these fellows are vying for the idiots of the year award or the idiots of the century award," she told ABC radio.
The official noted that the area was notoriously dangerous, where crocodile attacks take place. A few weeks before the "swimming incident" a giant crocodile fatally attacked 79-year-old Australian resident Anne Cameron who suffered from dementia.
People's Reaction
The men's reckless behavior deeply shocked social media users.
For instance, Queensland's environment minister, Steven Miles, tweeted:
Srsly? The meat we put in these traps is bait. For crocodiles. Don’t swim in them! It’s stupid, and illegal. @qldpol @7NewsCairns pic.twitter.com/nQsUZwI3Wc
