The City of the Dead Thousands of Feet Under Jerusalem

The first underground cemetery in 1,600 years will appear in one of the holiest cities in the world, providing an innovative solution to the shortage of burial space in the city.

A new large underground cemetery is expected to be completed in late 2018, more than a kilometer under the ground. A beehive-like structure with tunnels stretching more than a kilometer in length is carefully excavated underneath the Har Hamenuhot cemetery. It will provide some 22,000 new graves, which should be enough for the next decade.
