Navy troops attached to the Eastern Naval Command were on their routine patrol on July 11 when they noticed an elephant being dragged away by a current into the sea some 15 kilometers off the shore, the country’s Ministry of Defense reported in a press release.

Naval authorities promptly rushed several crafts to the animal's rescue. With Wildlife Department officials providing the necessary instructions, the Navy personnel were able to safely direct the elephant towards the coast. Subsequently, the animal was handed over to wildlife experts for treatment before returning the elephant to its life in the wild.
