The ill-named hoverboard is actually a self-balancing scooter. It was invented in China in 2014 and blew up in popularity in the US in 2015. It then blew up literally when the lithium battery was discovered to be unstable and prone to self-ignition due to faulty wiring. Over 500,000 units were recalled by the Consumer Product Safety Commission in July 2016.
