A group of local residents and anti-war activists protested in the northern Polish village of Redzikowo ahead of a ground-breaking ceremony for the United States' Aegis Ashore missile defense system.

Rally-goers were seen holding signs depicting crossed out rockets in show of opposition to the US missile system.

The United States' Aegis Ashore system in Poland is expected to become operational in 2018 and will form the European missile shield and be armed with land-based Standard Missile-3 (SM-3) interceptors. The SM-3 Block IB destroys ballistic missiles by means of high-speed impact.

On Friday, Washington and Warsaw officially began the construction of the ground-based Aegis battle management system.
