After Nikita Khrushchev resigned in 1964, Brezhnev was elected First Secretary (later General Secretary) of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of the Soviet Union and later Chairman of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the Soviet Union.
For 18 years, he was at the helm of the Soviet state. Later in his life, poor health prevented him from fulfilling his duties in full. Leonid Brezhnev died on November 10, 1982, and was buried at the foot of the Kremlin Wall on Red Square.
