The VII International Classic Cars Rally Golden Ring has kicked off in Moscow. Thirty crews from Russia, Ukraine, the United Kingdom, the United States, Italy, Switzerland and the Netherlands will drive 1,500 kilometers and visit 12 Russian cities, including Rostov, Kostroma, Suzdal, Uglich and Sergiev Posad.
Pavel Pankovsky, a permanent participant in the contest, will drive a 1966 Chevrolet Corvette Sting Ray, his birthday present. Despite its age, this car can reach the speed of over 200km/h as was designed for speed racing, Pankovsky believes.
However, speed is not that important: what really matters is the accuracy of passing 86 specially set up plots that are difficult to drive through. Both drivers and navigators have to be extremely careful and self-possessed in order not to stray from the route and to reach the checkpoint on time. Thus the average speed for the Golden Ring track will be about 40 km/h.
The race will last four days and will finish on July 13 in Moscow.
The Golden Ring international rally is the only Russian vintage car competition, conducted in accordance with the rules of Federation Internationale des Vehicules Anciens (FIVA). . The event, which has international classification, was organized by the Classical Car Club, comprising owners of rare cars manufactured before 1980.
