Some 160 animals living in the Moscow Zoo have now found sponsors among the animal-loving public and private organizations. As part of a program launched here 15 years ago, patrons take care of elephants, wolves, hedgehogs, raccoons, penguins, and other animals. The staff admit, however, that so far the program has not been particularly effective; only 2% of the zoo’s animals are involved at this point.
Five contributors joined the Moscow Zoo’s program at the initial stage, and the number of participants has since been growing at an increasingly high rate. Both individuals and organizations are sponsoring the animals.
Each of the contributors signs a contract pledging to finance the upkeep of an animal of his or her choice.
