A new type of safe, equipped with an automatic explosion device, will be introduced in Russia to protect cash-in-transit against robbery, Central Bank First Deputy Chairman Georgy Luntovsky said Monday, adding that the innovation will make it possible for cash-in-transit guards not to carry weapons.
According to the official, if an unauthorized attempt is made to break the safe open, it will explode, leaving 80% of the bills covered with paint. The Central Bank will not accept such stained banknotes, unless it is the bank owner that submits them.
Thanks to this new technique, there will be no need to armor cash-in-transit vehicles or to provide guards with firearms, he said.
Similar techniques are already being used in France, where, in the event of an attack, guards will just give their safe away to robbers.
In Russia, a trial of this technology will be launched first at Sberbank savings bank locations. If efficient, it will then begin to be applied throughout the country’s entire banking system.
