The Category 4 storm developed on 26 August in the Caribbean Sea before it hit the United States three days later. More than one million people still remain without power in the state of Louisiana. The US government has deployed 8,000 national guard troops to assist the victims.
Chaos has gripped New York after remnants of Hurricane Ida hit the city. The natural disaster paralysed the Big Apple, with water flooding the streets and subway lines. Mayor Bill de Blasio declared a state of emergency and issued a travel ban. All non-emergency vehicles have been told to stay off the city's roads and highways.
The National Weather Service said it recorded more rain on Wednesday than it normally did in a month. At least eight people died from flooding in New York and one person in the state of New Jersey. The New York Police Department said the age of the victims ranged between 2 and 86 and said the causes of death will be announced later.
