California is prone to earthquakes, seeing an average of two or three annually large enough to cause moderate damage. In June, an earthquake of 5.5 magnitude occured in southern California causing buildings to shake, according to witnesses.

A medium-strength earthquake measuring 4.2 on the Richter scale has shaken Los Angeles some 2 kilometres north of its Pacoima neighbourhood, the United States Geological Survey reported on Thursday. The tremor was registered at a depth of 7.9 km at 11:29:29 (UTC), the USGS said.

Local citizens took to social media to share their experiences of the seismic activity that caught them unawares in the middle of the night.
