Jim Ryan, a three-time Olympian, became the first high school student to clock a mile in less than 4 minutes - at that time he was 17 years old. Even though Ryan set world records and won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Mexico City, he is still most often remembered as “the first student to run a mile in 4 minutes”.

President Donald Trump is awarding the highest civilian honour to Jim Ryun. Earlier, the White House said Ryun, a former Kansas congressional representative, was one of the most accomplished American runners.

One mile (1,609m) is the only non-metric distance for which the IAAF is still registers world records.
