The Trump administration previously accused Beijing of covering up crucial data at the beginning of the pandemic, while the US Senate has investigated allegations that the UN World Health Organisation (WHO) helped China carry out the alleged coverup.

US Secretary of Defence Mark Esper stated in an interview with NBC on Thursday that the Chinese Communist Party was not sincere about the pandemic and tried to conceal crucial information from the United States.

"They've been misleading us, they've been opaque if you will from the early days of this virus. So I don't have much faith that they're even being truthful with us now", he stated.
