Last week, New York City's mayor Bill de Blasio said that the city's public school system will be closed for the rest of the school year amid the harsh coronavirus situation.

New York Mayor Bill de Blasio stated on Tuesday that the city will start building a new supply chain capable of producing up to 50,000 coronavirus tests weekly.

As of Tuesday, New York City has a total of 103,208 confirmed cases of the disease and nearly 6,900 fatalities, according to Johns Hopkins University.

In early April, US President Donald Trump ordered the deployment of 1,000 military personnel to New York as the city found itself at the centre of the coronavirus outbreak in the US.
