Earlier in the day, the Butte County Sheriff announced that the death toll in the Northern California wildfires had reached 42, while 228 people remain missing who had lost contact when the blazes hit the state last week.

The footage made Monday showed numerous cars that were abandoned by drivers trying to escape the wildfires via the 118 Freeway in Simi Valley. However, the drivers had to steer clear of three lines of the road when the side of the thoroughfare became engulfed in fire.

In the meantime, water-drop helicopters tried to put out the blaze that was threatening the freeway, also soaking the cars on a tight bend.
