With the tidal wave of hard-hitting sex scandals now reaching presidential heights, a woman in Michigan has accused former US President George H.W. Bush of groping her bottom during an official event when he was in office 25 years ago.

In an interview with CNN the woman, who is now 55, recalled how the president grabbed her buttocks during a re-election campaign fundraiser.

"We got closer together for a family photo and it was like 'Holy crap!'" she said, describing the moment Bush touched her rear end.

"It was like a gentle squeeze," she added.

The woman, whose name was not disclosed, said that she had thought it was just an accident, but the spate of similar accusations brought against the 93-year-old ex-Chief Executive over the past few weeks, had convinced her to come forward.

"All the focus has been on 'He's old.' OK, but he wasn't old when it happened to me," she said.

At least six other women earlier claimed that Bush had groped them during photo-ops, but this this is the first time he has been accused of sexual misbehavior while in office.

Actresses Heather Lind and Jordana Grolnick, author Christina Baker Kline, journalist Liz Allen and former politician Amanda Staples have all accused the ex-president of inappropriately touching their private parts.

A spokesman for Bush, Jim McGrath, said the former president had apologized “to anyone he may have offended during a photo op,” but blamed his wheelchair for the indecorum.

“At age 93, President Bush has been confined to a wheelchair for roughly five years, so his arm falls on the lower waist of people with whom he takes pictures,” McGrath said.

“To try to put people at ease, the president routinely tells the same joke — and on occasion, he has patted women’s rears in what he intended to be a good-natured manner,” he added. The scandal is the latest in the string of similar accusations earlier brought against show-biz executives, actors, media figures and politicians on both sides of the Atlantic.
