Photos of former FBI Director James Comey in Iowa wearing running shoes were posted on what is believed to be Comey’s personal Twitter account over the weekend. The state is where the first caucus is held for presidential races, motivating some fun speculation that Comey is hinting at a run for office in 2020.

"Goodbye Iowa. On the road home. Gotta get back to writing," @FormerBu tweeted with a picture of a contemplative Comey staring out at the Midwestern state's flat horizon.

The handle's username, "Reinhold Niebuhr," refers to a liberal theologian on whom Comey wrote his senior thesis as an undergraduate at the College of William and Mary in Williamsburg, Virginia.

In May, US President Donald Trump fired Comey from his post as the head of the nation's top law enforcement agency — something he only found out about from the news, catching him "flat footed," as the Los Angeles Times put it. The University of Chicago law graduate had been briefing a team in California before learning from a TV report that he had been dismissed.

Benjamin Wittes, founder of the Lawfare website and a friend of Comey's, tweeted "in light of this latest tweet, I will confirm that @FormerBu is, in fact, James Comey himself."

Several Twitter observers commented, "He's running!!!" Whether he's just out for a jog, as the photos indicate, or gearing up for political battle, remains to be seen.

In reference to the former FBI director's 6' 8'' (about 2.03 meters) height, one netizen quipped "u are tall enough to start the federal bureau of power line investigations."
