Boston Police arrested a person suspected of vandalizing the Holocaust Memorial, city's Mayor Marty Walsh said on Tuesday, expressing gratitude to police for quick action.

MOSCOW (Sputnik) A 17-year-old person threw a rock at the memorial smashing a pane of glass on late Monday, according to local media reports. Police managed to find the suspect due to witnesses' reports.

"Today & every day Boston stands up against hate. I'm saddened to see such a despicable action in this great city… Thankful to public and @bostonpolice for quick arrest of the person responsible for vandalizing Holocaust Memorial," Walsh wrote on Twitter.

The memorial was built in 1995. It contains six glass towers symbolizing six million Jews killed during the Holocaust.

The incident occurred only several days after the Saturday "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville organized by white nationalists to protest the removal of the Robert E. Lee monument from a downtown park. The rally subsequently led to clashes and a car ramming attack, with one person killed and over 30 people injured. In addition, two Virginia State Police troopers died when their helicopter crashed, as they patrolled near the site of clashes.
