President Donald Trump would fire his chief strategist Steve Bannon if he were serious about rejecting white supremacists, US House of Representatives Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi said in a statement on Monday.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — Trump should not have waiting until Monday to condemn Nazis and white supremacists, Pelosi added.

"If the President is sincere about rejecting white supremacists, he should remove all doubt by firing Steve Bannon and the other alt-right white supremacist sympathizers in the White House," Pelosi stated.

Pelosi claimed Trump's initial statement on Saturday about violence at the white nationalist rally in Charlottesville, Virginia did not denounce the white nationalist movement because Bannon "is an alt-right white supremacist sympathizer and a shameless enforcer of those un-American beliefs."

Violent clashes erupted in Charlottesville on Saturday at a white supremacist demonstration, and at least one woman was killed after a Nazi supporter drove his car into a crowd of counter-protesters.
