According to reports, Lockheed Martin has built a new electronically scanned array radar for engagement and surveillance to replace the older Patriot missile defense radar.

WASHINGTON (Sputnik) Lockheed Martin said in a statement on Monday it has built a new electronically scanned array radar for engagement and surveillance to replace the older Patriot missile defense radar as well as assess contemporary air and ballistic missile threats.

"Incremental upgrades to the existing Patriot radar no longer address current sustainment issues, current threat performance shortcomings, or provide growth for future and evolving threats," Lockheed Martin Next Generation Radar Systems Director Mark Mekker said.

Lockheed martin noted that the radar is a 360-degree capable sensor, adding that at the heart of the active electronically scanned array technology is Gallium Nirtride transmitter technology and advanced signal processing techniques.

Lockheed Martin will have the new radar on display at the Space and Missile Defense Symposium in the US state of Alabama August 8-10.
