WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — When asked by the White House press pool, Trump stated he had no idea Sessions had conversations with Ambassador Kislyak.
Earlier in the day, Trump said he was completely confident in Sessions amid allegations that the attorney general misled the Senate about his discussions with Kislyak, according to ABC News. The president has also noted that he does not think Sessions should recuse himself.
The report has prompted a heated debate with the Democrats calling for Sessions' removal from the office.
Sessions denied allegations he misled the Senate and said he is prepared to recuse himself from the investigation if the need arises. The White House spoke in support of the attorney general, saying in a statement that "General Sessions met with the ambassador in an official capacity as a member of the Senate Armed Services Committee, which is entirely consistent with his testimony."
The White House called the fuss over Sessions' alleged contacts with the Russians "the latest attack against the Trump Administration by partisan Democrats."
