WASHINGTON (Sputnik) — On Tuesday, Ryan defeated in his re-election bid Democratic speaker nominee Nancy Pelosi 239 votes to 189 votes.
"I have stood in this spot very, very, many times," Ryan told members of the House after winning re-election. "Today feels a whole lot different, part of it has to do with all the new faces in the House."
Ryan said all legislators are all united by a deep, abiding love of the United States.
"It is a slender but sturdy thread that holds us together," he added.
Ryan said in a speech upon his reelection that the Republican majority in the new US Congress must treat Democrats with respect and the American political system will still function in constructive unity after one of the most bitter and divisive elections ever.
"Will the tempers ever cool? Will the system still hold?" Ryan asked at the inaugural meeting of the new 115th Congress. "In the end they all dissolve in the silent and peaceful transfer of power… the people have spoken. We all accept the verdict."
Ryan acknowledged that the course of the 2016 presidential election revealed widespread unhappiness at the domestic condition of the Untied States among its people.
"Millions and millions of Americans across this country are deeply dissatisfied with their situation," he admitted.
Ryan maintained that the 435 members of the newly-elected House of Representatives were all patriots who loved their country.
Republicans control the majority of the House of Representatives with 241 seats and the Democrats control 194 seats.
